What do you wear during a massage?

Postby ace88 on Tue Oct 31, 2006 11:00 am

I was debating a friend about what most people wear during a massage. We had a disagreement, so I was curious to both clients and therapists, what you usually wear when receiving a massage?

A. Completely unclothed
B. Underwear
C. Thong or swimsuit
D. Other
E. Differs based on sex of therapist or situation (explain)

Also, if you are a therapist, what do most of your clients wear during the average therapeutic/Swedish massage? Percentages? Is it different among men/women? What would you rather your clients wear for a massage?

I take baggy clothes with me and change into them.

Yeah, I'm weird. I'm self-conscious about my legs hanging out and I never know what to do with my boobs. I hope the people working with me don't find this annoying, but ::shrugs::

It's not annoying at all! I work with people fully clothed all the way to naked under the sheet. I don't care what people wear, I can find the muscles. If you are comfortable enough to receive a massage only with your clothes on, then you will benefit from the massage only if your clothes are on.

When I give a massage, it is not about me.

I agree with Sharon. I tell my clients to undress as much as they feel comfortable, it's their comfort level that matters the most.

I guess I'll answer the question too. I prefer to be unclothed for a massage, except when I am at the chirpractor. Surprising to me, two therapists at the chiropractor I go to told me at least 50% of their clients are unclothed. I was under the impression that a chiro. most people wore their underwear or even more? When it is a therapist I see a lot and there are people outside the door in the hallways talking, I just would rather keep on my undies in that type of situation. When it is a therapist I only see once every two or three months at a private practice, I'd prefer to be unclothed. Weird, I know....

A couple times awhile ago I wore underwear, so the therapist assumed I didn't want my glutes done! They also missed areas of my hamstrings and quads, which as an athlete, I prefer to have done. So hence, I switched to being unclothed.

For the most part, Sharon had it right, undress as much as you're comfortable with, I can adapt. That said, I will add that when working on a male, if you prefer to leave your underwear on, it's easier to work around it if you wear briefs rather than boxer-briefs. I can work around them but especially for Swedish, it would seem uncomfortable to me if I were the client to have them rolled or bunched up out of the way. But the bottom (heehee) line is, do what makes YOU comfortable.

90% of the people I work on are nude under a sheet, 5% wear underwear, and 5% wear thongs (depending on the time of month - otherwise they are nude).

When I receive I, too, am nude under a sheet. I think I answered all your questions. Peace.

During a massage I usually wear my logo polo shirt, jeans of some variety, underwear and socks, shoes. belt. I was offered more money to do it in the buff once, but I turned him down. Not my thing.

OH, did you mean receiving the massage? I wear nothing, not even my glasses. Sometimes I wear a smile, sometimes not. Occasionally I drool...

But during study group, I wear whatever clothes I have on, kick off shoes and shirt when being treated.

When I'm getting a massage I'm usually fully undressed. Sometimes when I go in for specific work on my shoulder only, I keep my bottoms on because they will only be working on my upper body.

I'd say that half of my clients are completely naked, half keep their undies on but as most have stated I will work on the client in whatever state of dress or undress they are comfortable with.

I like to be nude when receiving massage.

I prefer to work on nude bodies.

That said, I don't pay enough attention to how many keep the underwear on as I easily work around them. Unless, as someone else mentioned they are wearing long underwear that comes down on the thigh. Mostly it's men who do this although I have a lady who sometimes wears shorts. I'll do my best with them. One male client always left his boxers on because he wasn't sure if it was appropriate to take them off. I assured him it was appropriate and he has since been nude. People have told me that they were never sure if they should get completely undressed because they thought it might send an inappropriate message to the therapist. I never shy down from telling people that it is appropriate to be nude, but I can work through clothing if they are more comfortable in them.

Depends on the type of bodytherapy and country. If getting Thai massage, shiatsu, etc.. I wear loose baggy clothes. In some countries, it varies. In Bali last week I had to put on disposable briefs at one place but nothing, not even a sheet, at others.
The glass is half empty. Deal with it.

I take everything off, unless its Thai.

Of all my clients, 90% are unclothed and the rest are in underwear.

I have to agree - I prefer to work on nude bodies or those in briefs. I always want the client to be comfortable though...and tell them so. I find boxers a little frustrating. Usually what I do is ask them to tuck the sheet under the bottom of their boxers and pull them up slightly.

I would say that about 75% of my clients are nude under the sheet.

I do prefer my clients to be nude for 2 reasons; 1) Because I can work on their gluts better & 2) if I'm doing a stone massage I like to do long strokes up the legs & over the back without getting oil on their underpants & breaking up the stroke.

If a client is wearing underwear, I will still work the gluts with compression over the sheet, otherwise I work the gluts with elbows, forearms etc.

If a male client is wearing boxers or long gym shorts I will pull them up a bit & tuck the sheet into the leg hole to 1) protect the shorts from oil & 2) be able to work the thigh a bit higher. I want to give a complete massage & not have to stop at the mid-thigh.

I would NEVER tell a client that they have to remove their undies,,, that is not my decision, it is not my massage. I will always respect my clients decision to wear what they are comfortable with.

Not everyone is completely comfortable going nude and I'm respectful of that.

As a therapist, I prefer my clients to be completely nude so I have no restrictions to accessing critical musculature, and to do ROM if I need to.
As a client, I prefer to be nude, unless I am recieving Thai massage or Reiki,as I can be clothed to recieve Reiki treatments. But I can customize according to the comfort level of the client.

Blessings and Light- :D

My first several massages, I kept my undies on only because I wasn't sure what the protocol was, and I thought I may give the therapist the wrong idea if I was completely nude.
It wasn't until years later, receiving work from a friend who was an MT, that I felt comfortable enough asking if it was OK for me to be completely nude. She told me that's what she preferred.
As I begin practicing as a professional, I find my preference is for the client to be completely undressed, but to echo others in this thread, I can work with whatever.
If a client isn't completely comfortable/at ease, there seems to be no point in doing the work.

My only two massages I have ever had, and they were only recently, were both done on me in the nude without draping. I always request them that way. Some practioners want me to be draped and others are ok with no draping. They were one male and another time a female therapist that accepted working on me in the nude and undraped.

It was a bit weird at first to be un-draped and naked with another male massaging me, but after a few minutes, it was just relaxing and nice. It feels natural and wonderful to be massaged this way. I didn't worry about the arousal that did happen both times, and happily the therapists both ignored it as well.

It might be wise to get a field sampling larger than two before you start talking about "some practitioners." I'd be curious just how many you had to call to find someone who would work on you undraped, and just how you knew that your "arousal" erection was okay with your therapists? Did they both rebook you?

Yes, both will re-book me at anytime. They both have emailed me since, asking me if I am ready for another appointment. I have used the reaction of both therapists during and after the massage as a guide to determine that neither seem bothered by the arousal that occured, or working on me un-draped.

I can't work on anyone here in my state undraped at anytime! I would not feel too comfy working on anyone without draping-I like to respect my own boundaries and not see anything I do not wish to see. I seriously doubt any sesnible MT would work on anyone who wishes to recieve an undraped massage,it just sets up the wrong intentions and just makes the wrong impression altogether! That's my .02!

I always request them that way, and only had two therapists that it was ok with. So I have only ever had two massages so far.
