Very interesting, I would have thought that the 1-3 year crowd would have a larger percentage.

Last month of school and I'm starting to get a little nervous. I guess the beginning jitters
are starting to set in. I guess everyone has gone through them, but getting the feelings,
"will I know what I'm doing", "will I be able to find clients", where will I give massages, etc...
Man, I need a massage to calm down. he, he.
Great to have somewhere like here to go and talk to other therapist.

Thanks

Hello RodneyBM,

From my experience this is a normal part of the process.

As I approached massage school graduation I started having panic attacks brought on by self doubt and strong feelings that I lacked the knowledge, awareness, and calmness to be a massage therapist. This, of course, turned out to not to be the case but the feelings were almost overwhelming at the time. Looking back it reminds me of stage fright or performance anxiety which I experience every time I play music in front of people though I have been performing for decades. I still experience a bit of this before each massage :) .

Ultimately I discovered that, at the time, I did lack the knowledge to be the amazing therapist I envisioned myself as. I think most of us lack this level of knowledge when fresh out-of-school but hopefully what we do leave school with is a strong, solid foundation on which to build stellar skills over time.

Try and embrace the nervousness and accept it as a good sign that you have the necessary concern and awareness to be a caring and focused therapist. Focus on rechanneling the nervous energy and fear to fuel your intent and awareness and you will come out the other side amazed at your skills and abilities.

The path of becoming a great bodyworker is a lifelong journey of learning, self discovery, and increased awareness which will inevitably lead to moments of uncertainty and doubt. Just always bring your awareness back to your breath…

Best of luck and definitely treat yourself to that massage :D .

I was a student and doing massages for a year but I didn't become a Massage Therapist until October. I've been working ever since then and people are always amazed I've only been one for 3 months.
Can't wait till my year anniversary :) :)

Yon and Ami, I'm curious how you manage to avoid burn-out? Are you full or part time? I'm approaching 15 years in the field soon. Admire 30 years and hope I make it!

Hi,All!

I've been doing massage since 1996 (almost 15 years) and I'm so grateful that I've chosen to do this. I've met so many interesting people and every day I have at least some level of excitement to be doing what I'm doing.

I was formerly doing lab/ scientific work which was what I thought I should be doing, but fortunately, I was laid off and was "forced into" the opportunity to do something that I really love doing.

Helping others (and myself) get well and & stay well through advanced massage, exercise, and nutrition will always be a practice in my life.

It is such an inspiration reading how many therapists are at 10+ years and then some! Amazing and inspiring! :)

I have been a massage therapist for 14 years, and I can't believe it has been that long!! The time really just flew by, since I love doing massage. I have been a prenatal therapist for two years now, and that is my favorite modality, especially when the baby kicks! I hope to be doing this for many more years to come. :D :smt006
