A Nation in Distress

Post by holley » Sun Jun 14, 2020 1:34 pm

“One of y'all's friends complained about 'defaming the flag' by flying it upside down:

"That person putting the flag up upside down should be arrested for defamation of our American flag, the symbol of OUR freedom."

I won't name names, but to that I must reply. Being brainwashed by patriotism and nationalism isn't a rebuttal these days; it's a symptom.

"Until human lives, of all colors, nationalities, orientations and genders are valued more than a cheap, Made-in-China piece of cloth, we are a nation in distress.

Until healthcare is a basic human right in this country, as it is in all the other major developed countries, especially during a pandemic, we are a nation in distress.

Until law enforcement is no longer above the law, and unarmed minorities are no longer slaughtered in our streets and their own beds; dehumanized, abused and incarcerated at a grossly disproportionate rate for victimless crimes; as long as we have prisons-for-profit, we are a nation in distress.

As long as peaceful protesters are maced, shot at, shoved, hit, run over and even murdered by militarized police, we are a nation in distress.

As long as our president is a kleptocrat, and our Congress is complicit, we are a nation in distress.

As long as we have 40+ million food insecure people in this country, we are a nation in distress.

As long as unemployment and under-employment is higher than it was during The Great Depression, we are a nation in distress.

As long as election fraud continues in this country, we are a nation in distress.

As long as one out of every three homeless men on our streets is a U.S. veteran, and hundreds of thousands, if not millions live unsheltered, we are a nation in distress.

As long as we are dropping bombs on other countries, for gold, oil and drugs, and our veterans are committing suicide at a rate of 22 per day on average, we are a nation in distress.

As long as our senior citizens are neglected; our poor; our disabled; our mentally ill; our abused; our addicted; we are a nation in distress.

As long as Congress refuses to raise the minimum wage to a living wage, we are a nation in distress.

As long as our farmers keep committing suicide, by the thousands now in recent years, we are a nation in distress.

As long as we violate the civil, constitutional and human rights of migrants, causing their children irreparable emotional harm, trauma, and expose them to sexual abuse, thousands unaccounted for and lost forever in the system, we are a nation in distress.

That flag is meaningless if its citizens live in dire straits, while the millionaires and billionaires receive trillions in tax breaks and bailouts. WE ARE A NATION IN DISTRESS."--Stacy Denard
