Another $50 Billion ?

Post by holley » Fri Apr 14, 2017 9:48 am

"None of the difficulties the United States has faced over the past 25 years has been in any way because its military was too small or weak. As then-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates noted in a 2007 lecture, “One of the most important lessons of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is that military success is not sufficient to win.” To achieve “long-term success,” he explained, requires “economic development, institution-building . . . [and] good governance.” Therefore, he called for “a dramatic increase in spending on the civilian instruments of national security,” including “diplomacy” and “foreign assistance.”

Consider the strategy that brought Iran to the negotiating table in 2013. It required intense diplomatic work to get Russia and China to agree to U.N. measures and to isolate Iran from neighbors such as Turkey. It took clever and tough sanctions devised by the Treasury Department that leveraged U.S. financial power. This is how power works in the modern world".- Fareed Zacharia

I dont suppose I should be surprised that

A) you consider the Iran deal to be a success
and
B) You consider Fareed Zacharia an expert worth quoting on any subject at all.

In one hour on one evening, Donald Trump did more to curb the slaughter of innocents in the Syrian civil war than Obama did in 8 years of cozying up to our enemies and apologizing for America's role in the world.

The Pakistani, Taliban, ISIS and NorKs are taking notice too...

Others hold Fareed in high esteem. Zakaria has been nominated five times for the National Magazine Award, and won it once, for his columns and commentary. His show has won a Peabody Award[28] and been nominated for several Emmys. He was conferred India Abroad Person of the Year 2008 award on 20 March 2009, in New York.[29] Filmmaker Mira Nair, who won the award for year 2007, honored her successor.

He has received honorary degrees from Harvard University, Brown University, Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Miami, Oberlin College, Bates College, and the University of Oklahoma among others.[30] He was the 2000 Annual Orator of the Philomathean Society of the University of Pennsylvania.

In January 2010, Zakaria was given the Padma Bhushan award by the Indian government for his contribution to the field of journalism.[31]

He serves on the board of the Council on Foreign Relations, the New America Foundation, Columbia University's International House, City College of New York's Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, and Shakespeare and Company. He was a trustee of Yale University and the Trilateral Commission.[32]
