World Competitions

Postby pueppi on Mon Dec 24, 2012 7:36 am

Intermittently I see some sort of World Competition that looks interesting and/or is inspiring in some way.

I know of the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition (Best Craftsmen in France), World Barista Championship, International Chili Cook-off and the World Bodypainting Festival. So, I'll add these in the following posts.

I am hoping that everyone here will add those they know of & share our world! :)

Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition

Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition (Best Craftsmen in France)

Wiki Info - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meilleur_Ouvrier_de_France

The Documentary - http://kingsofpastry.com/
(The documentary is just excellent. I loved it!)

Imagine a scene never before witnessed: Sixteen French pastry chefs gathered in Lyon for three intense days of mixing, piping and sculpting everything from delicate chocolates to six-foot sugar sculptures in hopes of being declared by President Nicolas Sarkozy one of the best. This is the prestigious Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition (Best Craftsmen in France). The blue, white and red striped collar worn on the jackets of the winners is more than the ultimate recognition for every pastry chef – it is a dream and an obsession.

Filmmakers D A Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus secured exclusive access to shoot this epic, never-before-filmed test of France’s finest artisans. The film follows chef Jacquy Pfeiffer, co-founder of Chicago’s French Pastry School, as he journeys back to his childhood home of Alsace to practice for the contest. Two other finalists are profiled in the film — chef Regis Lazard, who was competing for the second time (he dropped his sugar sculpture the first time), and chef Philippe Rigollot, from Maison Pic, France’s only three-star restaurant owned by a woman.

During the grueling final competition, chefs work under constant scrutiny by master judges and the critical palates of some of the world’s most renowned chefs evaluate their elaborate pastries. Finally, these pastry marathoners racing the clock must hand carry all their creations including their fragile sugar sculptures through a series of rooms to a final buffet area without shattering them. The film captures the high-stakes drama of the competition – passion, sacrifice, disappointment, and joy – in the quest to become one of the KINGS OF PASTRY.

Terlingua International Chili Cook-off

Postby pueppi on Mon Dec 24, 2012 9:03 am

CASI TICC (Terlingua International Chili Cook-off)

If you want to cook a little but aren't quite up to mixing it all yourself, try Cindy Reed's company for some of the best in pre-packed spices. Cin Chili & Company. I know Cindy personally, she was a 2 time winner of the cook-off.

Oh yeah, and CASI also has competitions in "Showmanship". I've competed with a team and even won. I have one of these great trophies to boot! :)

Competition among memes in a world with limited attention

http://www.nature.com/srep/2012/120329/ ... 00335.html

Our results do not constitute a proof that exogenous features, like intrinsic values of memes, play no role in determining their popularity. However we have shown that at the statistical level it is not necessary to invoke external explanations for the observed global dynamics of memes. This appears as an arresting conclusion that makes information epidemics quite different from the basic modeling and conceptual framework of biological epidemics. While the intrinsic features of viruses and their adaptation to hosts are extremely relevant in determining the winning strains, in the information world the limited time and attention of human behavior are sufficient to generate a complex information landscape and define a wide range of different meme spreading patterns. This calls for a major revision of many concepts commonly used in the modeling and characterization of meme diffusion and opens the path to different frameworks for the analysis of competition among ideas and strategies for the optimization/suppression of their spread.

The Great Garlic Cook-Off

Postby pueppi on Sun Feb 04, 2018 9:44 am

I don't know, but worse yet, I keep running across them from time to time! What's wrong with me?!!??! *haha*

Here's another, that I heard about on the Globe Trekker series on California.

The Great Garlic Cook-Off

At the Gilroy Garlic Festival, in California. :)

The Great Garlic Cook-Off is one of the most well-known cooking contests in the country. Beginning in September, the Gilroy Garlic Festival puts out a call across the United States and Canada for the best garlic recipes. Hundreds of amateur chefs respond with delicious sounding recipes that run the gamut from soups to desserts and from every type of cuisine.

Recent winners have included Garlic Goat Cheese Bacon Soufflé with Creamy Garlic Mustard Sauce; Sarsaparilla Glazed Wild West Burgers and Southwest Sweet Potatoes; and Crispy Pork Belly with Caramelized Onion and Fig Agrodolce and Creamy Polenta.

The most delicious-sounding recipes, approximately 50, are forwarded to a professional food consultant who makes the final selection of the eight recipes. The consultant prepares each recipe to ensure correct measurements and use of ingredients. These finalists' recipes are those considered to make the most interesting and exciting contest.

The finalists come to Gilroy to prepare their recipes on the Saturday of the festival in front of the public and a panel of celebrity judges. Winners are announced at 2:00 pm. The winner of the Great Garlic Cook-Off is appropriately honored with a crown of garlic and the grand prize of $5,000. Second place is awarded $2,500; third place, $1,000. The other finalists are given $100 each.
If you'd like to submit your original recipe for the 2018 Great Garlic Cook-Off, please complete the online Entry Form and submit no later than May 1, 2018.

Not a "world" competition, but still an interesting national festival...

Buccoo Goat Race Festival
Buccoo Integrated Facility, Tobago

http://www.buccoo.net/treasures/buccoo-goat-race :)

"Some may consider this an unusual event but it is by far one of the most exciting past times on the island. Occurring for almost 80 years, this past time has grown in to a nationwide sport and event taking place on “Easter Tuesday” in both Mount Pleasant and Buccoo, with the latter attracting hundreds of families into their village. Although Easter Tuesday is ‘officially’ Goat Races Day in Tobago, the activity now occurs more regularly on the entertainment calendar at events such as the Tobago Heritage Festival.

In this event, Jockeys and their goats race on a 100-yard (300 feet) grass field. Jockeys and their goats may train for months before participating in this event. Goats have their own stables, owners, trainers, jockeys and steeds. These goats are even given names like Rum Punch, while spectators get a chance to bet on their favorites. Jockeys, dressed in white shorts and coloured t-shirts, run barefoot alongside their goats, holding on to their steeds, while coaxing to the finish line. There are even prizes for the lucky winners of the races.

The Goat Race Festival has now become a major event in Tobago’s tourism calendar. It has evolved into a truly family affair where generations meet through tradition and visitors caught up in the festive atmosphere. Vendors line the street with their booths offering crafts, T-shirts, food and drink where persons gather for a street parade before the start of the races.

Easter in Tobago is chock full of activities and one of the most popular events is Goat Racing in Buccoo."
