Government Car Insurance

There is a push to remove uninsured drivers from Hawaii's roads by a computerized identification program. Other states have implemented similar programs.
Something is awry with such a focus.

Any state requiring automobile insurance should provide that insurance. A simple added state tax on gasoline could cover all drivers and could not be evaded. The more one drives, the more one pays. Universal coverage.

If you're already insured, how would you opt out of the tax on gasoline? Or would this replace car insurance companies?

Implemetation would phase out car insurance companies.
Only way to avoid tax would be to walk, bike, or rollerblade.

That makes sense. It would take a long time to phase out, especially since so many people are loyal to their insurance providers.
Have you seen discussions anywhere on this? Is there a push, however small, for this kind of system?

Mmmh... I kind of like the fact that younger drivers have to pay more, since they have a tendency to get in more accidents. And, I like the fact that my old truck insurance is much less than my new cars insurance.

I don't know that I am on board with a gas tax.

The beauty of a tax on gas to insure motorists is that there would be no uninsured drivers, a decrease in law enforcement costs, decreased use of the courts and no money spent on auto insurance advertising; all of which, pueppi, would save you
(and the rest of us) a boodle.
Does anyone know if any naton has implemented such an insurance program
Or any group supporting it in th u s a?
