Update a year later on H1N1:

H1N1 One Year Later: Did the Virus Save Lives? by Tim Ballisty

Now they are telling us the H1N1 saved us, but the new seasonal flu will likely be stronger. Ah, yes... it's always something...

Thanks Pueppi for taking the time to update us, a nice follow up to razor's post. Found it interesting. Since reading Laurie Garret's "The Coming Plague" and "The Great Influenza" I've been hypervigilaet when it comes to influenza. Wondering how many of us took the H1N1 flu shot and how many took the seasonal flu shot...... and then do a follow up next flu season to see the efficacy. How can that be put in survey form?

I haven't gotten one since 1999, I think it was... ;) That was the only time I got a flu shot.

I'm from Missouri - we apparently had one of the lowest vacination rates against H1N1 in the US - I guess our motto of being the "show me state" rang too true with most of the folks here.

I didn't trust the H1N1 vaccine - it was mostly untested and I didn't want to be a test subject for it.

Family Emergency Communication / Contact Plan

Create a list of all cell, work, and home numbers, and e-mail addresses of all family members.
.........

Plan for a pandemic

Store a two-week supply of water and food. .......

Limit the spread of germs and prevent infection

Teach your family and friends how to wash hands frequently with soap and water/gel hand sanitizer, and model correct behavior.
..........
Items to have on hand for an extended stay at home

Examples of food and non-perishables:
.......

Come visit any of my neighbors or my parents, they all have what is listed above, if not more...it's called being Mormon! HAHA! I've never been worried about the flu, especially these strains....even though I attended university (we all know how well students take care of themselves) during the big scares. We live in a bowl valley with an inversion...the strangling zombie fog is more likely to kill you than the swine flu.

The hospital I worked at during the swine flu saw 1 official case I think.... In a regional hospital for a valley of 100,000 people and about twice as many cows/farm critters. yes it was a 'worse' case of the flu if you managed to contract it but given about a week people were fine. just wash your frickin' hands people.

A 53-year-old businessman in Taiwan has the first case of the H7N9 bird flu virus outside mainland China, health officials there have confirmed.

The man is in a serious condition in hospital days after returning from the Chinese city of Suzhou, officials say.

China has confirmed 108 cases of H7N9 since it was initially reported in March, with at least 22 people dead.

H7N9 Serious Threat

Postby holley on Wed May 01, 2013 7:51 am

The outbreak of a new type of bird flu in China poses a "serious threat" to human health, but it is still too soon to predict how far it will spread, experts have said.

coronavirus

Postby holley on Tue May 21, 2013 7:46 am

A man has died of the novel coronavirus (NCoV) in Tunisia, in what is believed to be the first such case in Africa.
Tunisia's health ministry said the 66-year-old had visited Saudi Arabia, which is badly affected by the virus.
About 20 deaths and 41 cases have been reported worldwide since 2012, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says.
NCoV is from the same family of viruses as the one that caused the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) outbreak in 2003, killing about 770 people.
However, NCoV and Sars are distinct from each other, the WHO says.
These Tunisia cases haven't changed our risk assessment, but they do show the virus is still spreading”
It appears likely that the virus can be passed between people in close contact, it adds.

If it makes it to Mecca...

Concerns now focus on the mass religious pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia, which could spread any virus carried in the population, and are scheduled for July and October.
