Occasionally, we find that our forum has a few idiosyncracies which we are unable to fix. We are adding this thread to News and Troubleshooting as a reference.

If you begin to experience any issues with the forum you can come here and check to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar.

You will also be able to read what discussions have taken place about the issues. Some issues may be directly related to the forum, while others may be related to the members computer or programs.

WebTV's Foibles

If you have webtv, you may notice the following:

When posting a PM or post to the board, you will be taken to a page that says "Click here to return to your inbox" and "Click here to return to the index" (or words to that effect). The foible arises when the system automatically takes you back to where you just came from, without allowing you to click on a choice.

To date, we don't know why this happens and we don't have a solution for it.

If we ever come up with one, you'll probably notice it when your happily clicking around! :)

"No Posts Exist For The Topic" Glitch

In some BWOL forums where topics/threads have multiple pages, you may find a glitch. Normally you are able to click on a page (or next) and the page will open, showing messages posted.

With this glitch, the last page of the string shows a message
"No posts exist for this topic", and removes the option to select other pages when on the last page.

If you use the "back" key or reselect the topic, all posts and features are returned to normal.

This glitch, while annoying, has been found to be harmless. It's like hyperspace, maybe a great place to ground and center, but not good for much else. :)

Hopefully in the future a solution can be found, but for now we ask you to just ignore the message.

Editing & Deleting Posts - It All Depends...

Our phpbb forums have the uncanny ability to only allow members to delete a post when it has not been replied to. Otherwise the member is given the option to edit.

Until Phpbb makes a change to allow this, please don't hesitate to PM the moderator for the section which contains the item you want deleted.

You can read more about the Edit/Delete function in FAQ at: How to use Edit and Delete buttons

Staying Logged In at phpBB

Logging in on phpBB is not case sensitive, but, if you would like to stay logged in at this site for a long period of time, you will need to check the little box. Because of security measures having to do with IP's and proxies, it is something we can't currently fix.

If you log in (without the little box checked) and then surf elsewhere, after a few hours you may notice you are no longer logged in here even if the browser window shows you are still logged in on the index page. However, if you do check that little box, sometimes you can go wander off for days and when you come back you'll still be logged in. This somewhat depends on your own personal computer system.

Getting logged off can occur when using Internet Explorer (big blue e) even with the cookies enabled, though part of the problem could also be that the computer or internet server regularly runs a washing program that removes cookies.
FYI: the forum cookie is: phpbb2mysql

You may have noticed at other boards can keep you logged in for days, however, the maximum phpBB allows is 9999 seconds (2.7775 hours).

Some members have noticed that changing their Board Style to noteBored helps the member to not "have to log in". See: New Board Styles Now Available!
To change your style simply go into your profile, scroll down to the board style option and choose a style from the drop down menu. Click submit when you are done.

Search Function Gives Message: "You cannot make another search so soon after your last; please try again in a short while."

The search function doesn't always work. Sometimes it gives this message: "You cannot make another search so soon after your last; please try again in a short while."

It does this on the "find posts since your last visit" link, "your posts" link, and "search" link. It doesn't happen every time. Just sometimes.

The current board has a mandatory function allowing searches to only take place so many seconds apart from each other. If you are using the find posts since your last visit search and then searching your own posts or making another search too soon it will give you this message.

The solution is to wait about 15 - 30 seconds and try again.

Notice Of PM Via E-mail Alert, But Nothing In The "In Box"

If you get a notice of a PM in your box, but don't find it, the following may have happened:

1. If the user had their account deleted (spammer, or someone who left the board) their PMs will disappear too. So you'd get the notice but there wouldn't be anything there.

2. A user can also delete a PM before the recipient has read it, while it is still in the "outbox", and therefore would no loger be in your box to pick up when you get there.

Can't Save PM's In Some Board Styles

Recently we had some questions about saving PM's in different Board Styles. It seems there was originally some sort of glitch that made it difficult to "save" PM's from the Inbox and Outbox. A few members noticed this specifically occured when trying to save the message after opening it, while it was open, and, by trying to save the message by marking the check boxes from the list of messages. At that time, it did not appear to be a browser incompatibility issue or limitation, but a Board Style issue.

Since that time, the "issue" has somehow resolved itself on it's own (yes, phpBB is an odd-duck!) and now none of the Board Styles have this issue.

  • The newest complaint was that of "saving from the Outbox to the Savebox".

After some testing, it has been determined that we cannot save from the Outbox to the Savebox in any style.

One other item to note: Any message found in the Outbox will not have been picked up or read. As soon as the recipient gets the message, it leaves the sender's Outbox and goes into the sender's Sentbox.
