What all can be done with it? How do you use it?

I used to get kefir at health food stores. It came in different flavors and was packaged in little cartons like milk. I'm sure they've done something different with it since I've drank it, but I do remember it tasted like yogurt and strawberry was my favorite. It was quite tasty, as a matter of fact I think I'll get some tomorrow!

:smt043 I knew that much!

My friend asked me about it, and said it was growing like weeds all over her counter. THAT was news to me. I've grown sprouts on my kitchen counter...I've made yogurt, but it doesn't multiply!! I'm confused.

How does it taste compared to yogurt? I am reading that it is much more advantageous than yogurt, which we love. We make smoothies most every evening.

As I remember it was not as tart as yogurt, but still tangy and not overly sweet. It was thick but not as thick as buttermilk, probably a smoothie consistency, but it has been a long time since I've had any. I am going to check it out, cause my daughter likes those drinks that are like smoothies you can get in the dairy case, but kefir would be healthier and probably more economical.

Kefir is a plant, like a ginger beer plant in a way.

It looks like little white 'blobs', which you place in milk and they transform the milk into the yogurt-y drink. You can eat the kefir itself, but the yogurt is nicer. You can add fruit, make smoothies etc with it.

It, like most plants, grows bigger, which is what your friend is referring to.

Its good stuff, helps with bloating etc - but you have to be fairly disciplined with it, as you really need to change the milk every day.

You can also get a water kefir, which can be used with water or fruit juice and it makes it more healthful and slightly naturally sparkling.

Thanks. That sounds more like what she is talking about - kefir grains. What I can find in the health food store is the smoothy-ish kefir. I asked about kefir starter, and they ordered some. It is exactly like yogurt starter. It's confusing!! I did get some and am using it to culture kefir....or yogurt, if it isn't true kefir??? It's good, but I would love to get some grains and start it myself. My friend lives in Canada or she'd just send me some of hers.
