Oatmeal

Postby GinaT on Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:13 pm

I know this is silly, but has anyone tried the steel cut oatmeal? Oh MY Gosh, I tried it, and it is so good. I have been trying to make myself like oatmeal without putting tons of brown sugar on it, and it just wasn't working. I would try it with everything, nuts, dried fruits, ect. But still couldn't stomach it. Then I tried the steel cut, and I friggin' love it! I just put in 1 tsp of brown sugar, a dab of butter, and a splash of milk, and about 1 spoonful of dried blueberries. I think I might try eating this when I have my ice cream cravings. The only drawback is that it takes a while to cook. But I figure you could make a large pot of it, and put it in the fridge and then just reheat in the microwave. Anyway, I thought everyone would be interested, because we need our power breakfasts, right?

If you want to make a big batch to just reheat & eat quickly, you can even cook it in the crockpot on low overnight!

Personally, I can only eat my oatmeal baked. As in granola. ;) I make granola and eat it over yogurt when I need an ice cream fix and am already too cold to go out.

I'm glad you found a way you can enjoy oatmeal!

Wow, that is a great idea. I didn't even think about using the crockpot. Thanks

I just found a recipe on the internet for Crockpot steel cut Oats. (don't substitute with regular oats or quick cook)
1 cup of steel cut oats
4 cups of water
1/2 cup of half and half
1 cup of dried cranberries, but I think I am going to use blueberries
1 cup of chopped dates
Combine all ingredients, and cook on low for 8-9 hours.
Yummy! :D

This is so funny. My mum gave me this exact oatmeal (steel cut Irish porridge in a can, right?) for Christmas. I thought, "greeeeaaat...oaaatmeaal" but let me say that I have been eating that yummy stuff almost everyday since then. The other exciting thing is it's available at our everyday regular market right up the street. It seems to be great for my digestive also, very soothing...and I feel like I've had some lasting nutrition. I was eating it plain and then also with bananas. I have put light granulated brown sugar and butter on it, too. My hubby threw in some apples with brown sugar and cinnamon.

When I saw Oatmeal for a subject line, I was like, "it just can't be!" I've been singing the praises all over the place, and am on my way right now for some! I have even had it for supper.

I got mine in the health food section of my supermarket. I think it might also go by the name "Irish Oatmeal." Can anyone confirm this? I'm so sorry you went looking for it, and came home empty handed. I am going to try the crockpot recipe tonight. I will let you guys know how it turns out.

In my area it is available at the regular grocery store, in the isle with the rest of the oatmeal. It kind of blends into the shelf, sometimes I have to really search for it (and I know it's there). It is a white-ish grey colored can with black and gold lettering. Check out the link below for more info and a pic of the can (under products, steel cut oatmeal).

Ok, so I tried the recipe, and I wasn't thrilled with it. It just turned out too gummy. And I think if I did it again I would just do the oats, and then add the dried fruit after, because I kind of enjoy the chewy part of the dried fruit. And with this recipe all the fruit gets reconstituted and I don't like that. So, I think I will just go back to the stove top version of cooking it. Or I might try it again without the fruit. Also I put half the dried fruit, because two cups seemed like an awful lot, and I was right.

I love going to Au Bon Pain for breakfast on the weekends and getting their medium bowl of oatmeal. I grew up on oatmeal and can't be bothered to cook the stuff. LOL! But for some reason I really like it at Au Bon Pain. Maybe I have greener-grass-on-the-other-side-of-the-fence syndrome!

Nothing silly about oatmeal, I love it.

Ironically after reading these posts, the next day I got my flyer from Trader Joe's. Don't know if you guys have access to TJ's, but they are now advertising they're great new product of frozen steel-cut oats. (cooked and then frozen)
Perfect for that in-a-rush morning when you want comfort, but not 40 minutes of stirring. :P

I personally am addicted to Arrowhead Mills brand "4 grain Plus Flax" it only takes about 10 minutes and has cracked wheat, steel cut oats, rye and barley grits, and flax seed. YUMMY!

happy eating,
Noel

More delicious AND more healthful... the quick oats are less nutritious or something.

Try this…Put oats and water in the pan, stick it in frig overnight. They will not take long to cook in the morning.

I’m a whole grain freak, and although I can find some of their products locally, I frequently order on-line. I love this co. and I don’t think there is a grain they don’t make, and their prices are great.

I tried the Trader Joes frozen. Its pretty good. But I admit I added a bit more brown sugar. Definatly a fuller nuttier taste to it. I get the steel cut in the box from Trader Joes all the time and its good too.

I wish there was a Trader Joes here in FL. I got spoiled last time I was in Cali, where they have like a million of them.

Plucky thanks for the link for the steel oats. Looked like a great deal till I checked the shipping. $38 for 2-25lb packages. Shipping was more than the 2 packages of oatmeal...

Are you trying to order 50 lbs of oatmeal?

I think you should double check.

Many stoes carry Bob's stuff. I know Albertsons and Publix do, so ask a local chain about ordering it. Some will honor your request.

I just noticed you live in Sarasota. Really, you should have no trouble finding Bob's grains in your neighborhood. Publix, Albertsons carry it. I've seen it in small health food stores too.

Plucky yes there are Publix and Albertsons here. I haven't been to the store to check yet, but I seriously have my doubts about them carrying 25# of Steel Cut Oats. The online price for 25# is $12.87. The online price for 1.5# is $2.06. I think if Publix or Albertson has it at all, it will be this 1.5# size and if you do the math (actually I will do it for you) I'd have to buy 33.333333333333333... bags of Steel Cut Oats to get the 50# I wanted to order, and now let's figure the price.

$68.67 for 33.333333333333333... bags of Steel Cut Oats (50#) (I'd highly doubt they'd even have 33.333333333 bags on their shelf)
$25.74 for (2) 25# bags of Steel Cut Oats (50#)

I used the $2.06 price from the website, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a price closer to or above $3.00 per 1.5# at grocery stores (if they carry this brand even). If it's close to $3.00 that's almost $100 for oatmeal almost 4 times the amount the same thing costs in the 25# bag online. I guess I should have asked where can I get a 25# bag of this stuff without having to order online to avoid paying those steep shipping charges?

I think your best bet for buying that quantity is either at Whole Foods or Wild Oats. They both carry a large variety of bulk foods, and give modest discounts on buying a whole bag of something. I think there's a Whole Foods in Sarasota. Or maybe there is an independantly owned health food store in your neighborhood that can help you out.

Noel

P.S. Talk to the bulk food or grocery manager. Even if they aren't carrying steel-cut in bulk, they should still be able to order it for you.

They surely don’t carry 25lb bags of oatmeal.

I mentioned Publix and Albertsons as a local way to try Bob’s products.
I love the flaxseed meal sprinkled on the 10 grain hot cereal. It's a powerhouse of nutrients.

If you need a large quantity, seek out a Whole Foods market as Noel suggested.
