Q? What the feet say?

Postby rockpaperscissors on Sat Jul 16, 2005 6:58 pm

Hello--
I should start by saying I am not a Reflexologist, however I am interested in some things and have a few questions for you guys.

I was working a couples Massage with another therapist and she said she always starts her Massage with the feet because it tells her were in the body all the tension/stress/exc is?
I don't get it! How can someone tell by the feet were all the tension is?
I am just really curious about it and I would have asked her, however after the Massage I had another and she had to go to her shop so.... here I am wondering if someone can explain!

Thanks Stacey

Stacey I'm not a reflexologist either... but had an interesting experience with a trade I did with one. She took my left foot in hand and touched the bottom of it for the first time. (I'm guessing a solar plexus reflex?)
Anyway, she got a puzzled look on her face and then said to me in a disbelieving tone of voice... "Would you call yourself.... high strung?"
And I said, "Yes, definitely."
She said, she would never have guessed that, because I don't project that to others. She thought I was very easy going. *chuckles*
Anyway, I thought it was interesting to note... that in my experience, the feet DO indeed seem to say something to a trained reflexologist! LOL

Hi Stacey - the feet contain reflexes that correspond to the rest of the body. If a reflex is congested it's usually a sure sign that the corresponding area of the body is congested too. For instance, in many cases where you notice callusing on the heels, and it's not from improper footwear, it is likely hips or low back problems. Or sometimes a person's big toe will mimic the forward strain of a "computer neck" by growing sensitive, puffy or even callusing.

I hope this helps to answer your general question. There are some wonderful website and books to get a basic understanding of reflexology. In my experience it takes a lot of hands-on experience to grasp some of the various "textures" of a congested reflex. But it is a very exciting profession. :)

I would have never really thought to start a full massage out with the feet, but this is an idea! ;D Might be a nice change of pace.

I offer a headache massage and while the heat is setting in on the shoulders and neck, I massage the feet. I do some basic moves that I learned over the last years (nothing much) in hopes that it helps also. Seems too.

That sounds yummy! Have you ever thought of adding some stimulus to those points in the face? I know when my head feels like it is going to explode from the pressure a few firm presses on the face and head work wonders.

Mind, this is totally out of my scope of practice but it probably isn't out of yours. :)

If the client is suffering from a headache the day of the massage, I do massage the face and the temples as well as the ears and scalp. What relief they get! Otherwise I use the massage as a maintenance against headaches.
