Re: Before Massage Envy

Going rate for an employee therapist 11 years ago varied. In our town there were very few employee MTs then and those made around $15 an hour plus tips.

Re: Asked to never work on a particular client

The corporate policy says you can't discriminate, but that means discriminating against someone in a protected class (such as race, gender identity, etc). I've faced a similar choice only once, when presented with a client who turned out to be in a particularly hateful and violent group. I made the ...

Re: Your best cervical-fusion techniques

Thank you for all the suggestions! Do you ever run into this trouble: the more vertebrae fused, the larger the load on the soft tissue above and below the fusions. The trigger points alone in those top-and-bottom-vert areas can be almost unmanageable! Occasionally I feel like "flexibility" or ROM ar...

Re: Has this ever happened to you?

I doubt it's "negative energy." It's probably one of the physical explanations offered above.
Would you consider not using the term "retarded" to describe feeling silly? Thanks.

Your best cervical-fusion techniques

Hit me! I've had several clients lately with multiple cervical fusions -- in some cases as big as C3-T1. What are your best techniques for pain relief and maximum safe ROM for these patients?

Re: Do you receive many requests for Aromatherapy?

I use aromatherapy with almost every massage, but I use it in a treatment context so I just whip out the individual bottles of lotion that are already loaded with essentials; there is no add'l fee. My favorites are: Palmarosa, for slow nerve regrowth Sweet orange or lavender, for relaxation A combo ...

I don't think there is a "spirit" in us, so no, I don't think massage therapy changes that. I have seen examples of personal growth facilitated by contact.

For what it's worth - LMP is a designation used only by Washington state at this time; no other state uses it. So that's one you don't have to worry about

Still a big fan of Birkenstock shoes, all these years later. But I wear them with socks and slip the shoes off during the session. Not a fan of the barefoot look for professionalism.

Re: Crush trauma/nerve damage - warning, a little graphic

While the cold feet can be labeled as Reynauds - it's also a sign that not only is there physical trauma, but trauma on the energetic levels. Do they still have signs of the injuries, such as visible swelling & bruising? Yes. There are still indentations in the shins from the impact (with small dar...

Re: Crush trauma/nerve damage - warning, a little graphic

[ I think that 2x/week for 4 weeks, is not enough time for you to see the results you are hoping for, especially since the accident was 6 months ago. I would not start getting too stressed about "upping your game" (as I believe you are quite competent), until you've seen them for at least ten to tw...

Re: Crush trauma/nerve damage - warning, a little graphic

Thanks for the advice and encouragement guys. :smt049 I don't think they would have chosen to come to us at all without prompting. Most of the work we do in our clinic is workers' comp cases, referred by an occupational medicine office. The docs there are the ones who have faith in our work, and the...

Crush trauma/nerve damage - warning, a little graphic

I have a pair of patients who were in a farm accident - a giant piece of farm equipment fell on about 10 workers, trapping them all by the legs for about a half hour. It was bad - several of the workers had broken legs, though not my patients. The accident was nearly 6 months ago. My patients starte...

Car crashes and whiplash in the elderly

I've been seeing some much older people from car crashes lately - 72, 78, and 86. No broken bones; one concussion; all have some form of whiplash (one hit a tree, one rear-ended someone, one was t-boned). Obvs. they are taking much longer to heal than a younger person in a similar crash. And in all ...

Last session went well. The adhered tissues in the entirety of BL lower legs were MUCH freer and softer than before, a major milestone. Oh, I am so sorry to hear this. I spoke with her several times over the phone when I was doing some CEUs involving her book a few years back, and she was warm, helpful, and completely delightful.

Her book has helped our profession immensely. Nina will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
