Re: Coordinating schedules with clinics

The best option, if it is possible, IMO, would be to see if Google Calendar can by sync'd with whatever calendar software the Chiro's office is using. Other than that, you would either need to stop using Google Calendar or the receptionist would need to get better at checking the Google Calendar bef...

I agree that communication is key, and while posting this information here to the forum might help other MTs think about stuff they may or may not already be thinking about, I would really encourage you to email the therapist(s) in question the specific complaints you had regarding your experience w...

Re: The Line Between Favor and Obligation

Wow! First off, you are NOT doing the client any favors. The spa, not the client, called you in on your non-spa day and when the client stated his preference for scheduling, you offered up a spot on your non-spa day. You had the option right then of advising the client of your availability and chose...

Re: Insurance network providers and EIN questions

I have had quite a bit of experience with insurance during the past decade + of accepting various forms of insurance in my practice (health, auto/medpay/PIP and work comp). (Since the OP is asking only about Health Insurance, my answers are specific to that type of insurance. Auto/medpay/PIP and Wor...

Re: Massage School law on earning while being a student

So Ideally it should be free massage for people as the sole purpose is students to learn how a professional massage and real client environment feels like. I fail to understand why, in your opinion, "it should be free massage." Is there no value to the recipient? If the massage you're providing as ...

This is why I require all package sessions be booked at the time of purchase. Personally, I think the sessions should be honored. The $ the client paid for the sessions didn't expire so why should the sessions themselves? Have you raised your rates during the interim? Were the sessions sold at a HUG...

Re: Working from Home

Depending on where you are located and the amenities of the spa, $425/mo for a room seems quite reasonable - with or without marketing support from the spa. How busy is the rest of the spa? It's possible they're doing marketing that's not working but it's also possible that they over-promised and un...

Re: Giving away massage is NOT a marketing expense

But still, why does does this myth show up so persistently? Wishful thinking? Because a lot of MTs are too uninformed to know better and/or maybe too lazy to check thus making this a persuasive argument to get us to give away our time for free. IMO, this is in the same ballpark as all those event c...

I am a first year MT and have a limited toolbox to work with. I don't' t have the time or budget for CE right now either. All the chair massage classes are on weekends, and I can't afford to miss work those days right now. Tools and things like massage cloth are out. I understand that CEs might be ...

Re: Sweater elbows

I always ask sweater wearing clients if they have anything on underneath (tshirt, etc.) and if they do I'll ask them to remove the sweater so "the sweater doesn't get the massage." I find people are more willing to remove their sweaters if it's for their benefit rather than mine.

Re: Whelp, lost a client today...

Good for you for having and enforcing your cancellation policy! So many MTs won't put one into place because they fear losing a client over a cancellation fee. But, as you just found out - we don't lose GOOD clients over these fees. Hopefully, with this one gone, it'll make room on your book for two...

I don't know about online courses, but LMT Success Group teaches a great class on insurance billing for massage therapists. They're based in Florida, but offer classes throughout the country.

Re: Sharing gift cards

Here is my other concern with doing things this way. If things keep going the way they are going and MT could easily work off their rent by seeing the gift card and package clients I have sold too, and not see their own cash clients. So they are just working off their rent a lot of the time and are...

Since January I have been changing over to renters. And the challenge has been gift cards. At first I thought is was a good idea to give the MT who saw the gift card client 70% of the value and take that off the rent for the next month. But one month I had one MT who saw so many gift card clients t...

Yes, I think you were out of line. I said: "I feel like your energy is stagnant, like it's stuck" I don't have any experience with energy work. Without any education or experience with energy work, you told your client there was something wrong with them. In this case, stagnant energy. Even though y...

So now I'm debating whether I should inquire at the state certification board about her. The board doesn't guarantee anonymity of those who bring complaints, and I really would be embarrassed if it got back to her that I was the one who inquired. Here's the crux of the issue IMO. If you feel you ha...

They did mention during the interview that they wanted us on the floor when there was no client. However, they did not mention that you could not sit at all. However I have one therapist who is very upset anytime I text her after 10pm. It has happened twice over 2 years. Re: Shaken from massage with male client today...help!

Today I had an odd call from a new client who wanted a full body relaxation massage. The call was very brief and to the point. I didn't get a good feeling from that short phone call. A lot of MTs won't book same day appointments as a measure to dissuade such behavior as your client exhibited today....

Being asked to "volunteer" at events

Recently I've been asked to "volunteer" my services (read: give out free chair massage) at a few different "employee health fair" events. These requests tend to make me bristle for a couple of reasons: The requester is always certain to mention how great this event will be in helping me to market my...

Has anyone ever done anything like this? What have your results been? $500 a month is scary since I am essentially on my own. That is a lot of $ for a solo-practitioner. Is there a minimum commitment? (6 months? one-year?) ...or are you able to cancel at any time if it's not working? IMO, it's not ...

The ABMP coverage is what they call "occurrence based" - regardless of when the claim is actually filed, coverage is based on when the loss occurred as long as it was occurred while the policy was in force. Your new policy is "claims based" - the claim must be filed while the policy is in force; if ...
